One architect. Production backends, shipped fast.

MMQR Development is Michael — a software architect in Calgary, Alberta, working remotely for clients anywhere in the world. I specialize in backend development on multihomed cloud servers: complex SQL data design, efficient query optimization, and features built at AI speed under careful, step-by-step direction.

02 · Services

The work I take on

01 Multihomed cloud architecture Servers on more than one provider and more than one network path, so a single outage is an inconvenience, not an incident.
02 SQL schema design Complex data modelled carefully up front — normalized where it matters, denormalized where it pays, constrained so bad data cannot get in.
03 Query optimization Slow queries read, explained and rewritten. Indexes, plans and measurements — not guesswork.
04 API & backend development Services and APIs in Go: small, explicit, observable, and boring to operate.
05 AI-assisted development AI agents draft; I direct and review. Development at AI speed, with an architect deciding every step.
06 Legacy system rescue Inherited systems stabilized: reproduce the build, add tests, then change with confidence.
07 Retainer & maintenance Ongoing care for systems I build or adopt: monitoring, patches, and a person who answers.
03 · How I work with AI

Senior judgment at AI speed

AI agents make development fast. What keeps it correct is an architect who knows what to build, in what order, and what to reject.

Architecture first

Every feature starts as a written design: the data model, the interfaces, the failure modes. The AI never guesses at structure — structure is decided before code exists.

Guided step by step

Agents write the code in small, reviewable steps. Guiding the AI through the careful development of each feature is the job of an experienced software architect — that is the job I do.

Reviewed, tested, shipped

Generated code is held to the same standard as handwritten code: read line by line, tested, benchmarked. Speed is only worth having when the result holds.

Projects

Five projects on GitHub, each with a page of its own. Four of them run a DOCSIS cable plant; the fifth is a webmail client, used daily.

01 docsis_server An integrated provisioning server for DOCSIS cable plants: DHCPv4, DHCPv6, TFTP, time-of-day and syslog in six Rust processes, driven from MySQL tables. A port of a C server that ran a production plant for two decades. GPLv2 or later.
02 docsis_admin The web portal for those tables, in Go and htmx: one console, several plants, three roles, and an admin who cannot create another admin. Live demo. GPLv2 or later.
03 docsis_monitor Watches the plant's provisioning traffic on the wire and alerts when it stops looking like a working plant — the failures the server's own logs cannot see. Rust, static. GPLv2 or later.
04 docsis_config_generator The docsis configuration-file encoder ported from C to Rust: same syntax, same bytes, same command line, none of the C dependencies. GPLv2 or later.
05 starry_go_mail A webmail client in Go and htmx: IMAP, SMTP, OpenPGP, two-factor sign-in, optional writing assistants, one static binary and no build step. MIT.
